Welcome to Giant Panda Class
Welcome to the Nursery page for Thorpe Lea Primary School
Our topic for this half term is
This half term at Nursery we will be learning all about different traditional tales, for example 'The Gingerbread Man', 'Little Red Hen', and 'Little Red Riding Hood'. We will focus on a different story each week, and cover it in depth. Please feel free to join us on Monday and Friday morning to hear our story of the week being read, 8:45 - 9:00.
You may have noticed lots of cakes being baked recently in Giant Panda Class! As a Nursery we have introduced free access to baking, available whenever the children choose. This task supports a range of skills, ranging from weight and measuring skills, to practical fine motor skills. This also helps the children build their independence, as they are now able to follow the picture recipe themselves, and independently make the mixture. We hope you enjoy your children's creations!
Our role play area is a home corner at the moment, representing a familiar place to the children as they start the new school year. This role play area will encourage the children to engage in imaginary role play, and use skills they see in their real lives in their play, for example feeding babies, cooking dinner, and even hoovering! Outside we have a road with road signs, supporting imaginative play using our bikes. We also have a building site, where the children are able to work together to build and construct houses, bridges and towers, all the time wearing builders hard hats and high vis jackets! Whilst these role plays will help us to develop the children's imagination, it will also let them develop a variety of other skills including, Literacy, Mathematics, curiosity and problem solving!
In the Nursery our focus is the child and the child's interests. We follow these interests and use them to support our teaching. This means that one day we might be working together to construct and decorate a house, and bug hunting with maps the next day! We believe that children learn best when they are completely engaged in the moment, which is why we choose to follow their interests and ideas and build them into teaching moments. We follow our topics by reading stories around them, which often sparks child initiated play and learning, however do not be surprised if we sometimes go off topic! Because of this, we also like to 'focus' on a few children per week. This does not mean we don't focus on any other children day to day, all it means is that we will send home a communication form to parents to get your input on your child's learning, and after the week is complete you will get an A3 sheet detailing different teaching and learning moments that happened to your child during that week. This is to involve you parents more in your child's learning, and give you the opportunity to comment and ask questions as we move through the year. We also ask that on these weeks, your child brings (or emails) in some family photos for them to show the class and talk about, taking over from show and tell.
On this page you will find information about our daily routine, our half termly topic, special events and news.
Please check this page regularly to keep yourself updated!
Thank You for your continued support.
