At Thorpe Lea we are committed to providing our pupils with 2 hours of high quality PE (Physical Education) each week with one session indoors and one session outside. The intent of our curriculum is to provide the children with a solid base in the Foundation stage and KS1 from which they can grow and develop their sport specific skills as they move into KS2.
As a school, we value the importance of leading a healthy active lifestyle and encourage the children wherever we can to eat healthily, stay active and take part in as much physical activity as they can.
PE is taught using the Primary PE Planning scheme which offers support to our KS1 and KS2 teachers with their planning and teaching of lessons. The scheme ensures there is a clear progression of skills (see below) as the children move through the school with their ABC's (Agility, Balance and Co-ordination) being targeted in KS1, moving through to the sport specific skills in LKS2 and finally to ensuring the children are ready for competitive action in UKS2 where we compete against other local schools in both Football and Netball leagues as well as a multitude of other competitions and festivals that we enter via our ERPSSA (Elmbridge & Runnymede School sports Association) membership.
Our swimming runs in the Summer Term in Year 4 and usually takes place for 10 weeks with Year 5 and 6 students who didn't reach the criteria in previous years also being provided with top up sessions. Lessons take place for 1 hour in the afternoon at Egham Orbit Leisure Centre and aim to provide a fun water-based alternative physical activity while developing water confidence, stroke technique and an understanding of water safety.
We have in place a comprehensive set of after school clubs run by both staff members and external providers. These clubs are complemented by regular external visitors who provide additional expert coaching to the children across the school in sports such as Tag-Rugby and Cricket.
In addition to this, as a school we try our best to encourage the children to stay active through our weekly 'Thorpe Active' competition where children's steps are monitored in each class and celebrated at the end of each week. We also aim to bring in visitors to inspire the children, from professional Long Jumpers through the Sports for Champions program and even World Champion BMX champions!
Teaching and learning is monitored through regular lesson observations and pupil conferencing. Teachers provide a half termly assessment via their professional judgment which is monitored by the subject leader.
We aim to ensure that all children are able to develop the skills necessary to take part in basic competition by the time they reach UKS2 and aim for all children to represent the school in a competition/festival before they leave at the end of Year 6.
We encourage the children to live a healthy lifestyle and believe that our focus on physical activity will inspire our pupils to live an active lifestyle and inspire many to take up a career in the sporting world!
