Art

Art, DT and Music are subjects that make up the Arts. All members of staff at Thorpe Lea encourage the children to express their creativity. The subject leader is Miss Tyler

Intent

At Thorpe Lea, we aim to provide opportunities for children to explore their own ideas and experiment with different artistic techniques, allowing them to develop a love of creating. We intend to inspire children through the studies of a range of artists, including craft makers and designers.

Implement

The teaching and implementation of the Art curriculum at Thorpe Lea Primary School is planned in line with the National Curriculum and linked to topics. The topics we teach are closely interwoven with foundation subjects, so Art can be appreciated in all areas of the curriculum. Children are taught to develop and master a variety of artistic skills such as sculpting, printing, painting and sketching. More can be found on our Long Term Map.

Art is covered in the ‘Expressive Arts and Design’ area of the Early Years Framework. While specific Art ‘lessons’ may not be taught regularly, Art is integrated into the classroom environment, with specific craft and painting areas set up daily to encourage child initiated artistic work and experimentation. Colour mixing is a particular point covered in the EYFS framework, and this is encouraged through the pallets and paint options set up.

At Thorpe Lea Primary School, we are lucky to have an Art Week during our Summer Term. During this Art Week, all children across the school study a single painting. In their classes, they explore different themes around this painting, ultimately developing a project with a final piece or pieces of work. This work is then displayed in the ‘Thorpe Lea Art Gallery’ for the parents to come and view!

Impact

Throughout the year, there are ongoing assessments which help to inform teachers in future lessons. Data is collected and assessed on a termly basis and teachers use this to inform and address any trends or gaps in attainment. Continuous assessments allow teachers to review the quality of teaching, and the progression of children's knowledge and skills, ensuring they are supported and challenged appropriately.
