Remote Learning Offer

Introduction

At Thorpe Lea, we want to make sure that all of our students have access to a strong and stable education, and we should do our best to provide this, even if the school has to shut. Detailed below, you will find information which will layout our plans for ensuring that the children in our school, can still maintain contact with their teacher and be provided with opportunities to continue their education whilst at home.

We will have a two-tier system:

  • Tier 1 will be for when individuals are self-isolating at home. Work will be provided by the class teacher, to be completed at home and can then be returned to school when they are able to come back into the classroom.
  • Tier 2 will be for when 1 or more bubbles has to close. Teachers will be in contact with the children regularly and work will be provided through the class page on the school website.
To enable teaching and learning to continue as effectively as possible during the need for remote learning:

Tier 1

  • Work will be set by the class teacher on the class page, for the children to complete at home, as they isolate. This pack will remain for any children who go off, whilst their bubble is open.
  • Parents can email the office with any questions and teachers can phone home to answer any queries.
  • The school office will contact parents to keep up to date with information surrounding the children’s return to school.

Tier 2

  • We will use Teams to run a 30 minute daily ‘Tutor time’, where teachers can catch up with the children and answer any questions that they may have.
    • Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 - 9:00 am to 9:30 am
    • Year 3 and Year 4 - 9:30 am to 10:00 am
    • Year 5 and Year 6 - 10:00 am to 10:30 am
  • We will use Class Dojo to offer support through the day and offer brief feedback on pieces of work submitted. This work will not be assessed according to our marking policy. A short comment will be provided to show we have seen the work and provide an opportunity for improvement. Class Dojo (Tapestry for the EYFS), will also be a way of teachers offering assistance to someone who may be struggling with how to complete a piece of work.
  • We will monitor Class Dojo (Tapestry for the EYFS), Teams and emails to the teacher email addresses, to follow up with any issues.
  • We will monitor the pupil’s engagement with the tasks set on the class page.
  • We will monitor the phone logs to catch up with any parents who call the school with any concerns.
  • We will have clear expectations that the work should be completed to the best of their ability, using the resources provided on the class page.
  • ELSA and HSLW will maintain contact with vulnerable families, to ensure they are doing well.
  • A central database will be kept of logins for parents, in case they have trouble accessing their accounts.
Our staff will:

Tier 1

  • Isolation work packs will be loaded onto the class page, containing two weeks’ worth of work, to be completed by the children isolating whilst waiting for a COVID test.
  • Additional packs will be uploaded if required, if children have to isolate multiple times, but this will be done when this situation arises.
  • Any queries parents have, will be answered though an email reply or a short telephone conversation.

Tier 2

  • Provide daily tasks, using the Oak National Academy, on the class pages on the school website.
  • Work to be set on class page for the week by the Monday morning, at 9am.
  • Set tasks will be based around English, Maths and a chosen foundation subject in line with normal class-based curriculum. This work will come from the Oak National Academy.
  • A daily ‘Tutoring’ session will be held on Teams for those who can join in. (Times indicated above).
  • Provide feedback and help on Class Dojo (Tapestry for the EYFS), throughout the week, during the normal school hours.
  • In the EYFS we will focus on a theme each week and every day, parents will be given activities based around this theme. They will be encouraged to do as many as they can fit in the day. This will be based around the EYFS framework and depend on the age range of the children. The work set, will be designed to engage the children and keep them as focused as they can be on the different tasks.
Our pupils will be expected to:

Tier 1

  • Children will be expected to engage with the work and complete it to the best of their ability, so as to avoid falling behind with the class work.
  • Use online resources such as TTRockstars and Abacus to practice their skills whilst at home.
  • Each lesson is recommended to last 10-15 mins for EYFS (with more active work available), 20 mins each in KS1, 30 mins each in Yrs. 3 & 4 and 40 mins each in Yrs. 5 & 6.

Tier 2

  • Log onto Teams each day to engage with the ‘tutor’ session with the class teacher and other members of the class.
  • Watch the Oak National Academy videos and complete the tasks set by the teachers on the service.
  • Complete work in a school exercise book that has been sent home or on paper at home.
  • In total, children should spend a minimum of 3hrs (Reception - Year 2) and 4hrs (Year 3 - Year 6) on their work. This should be separated out into the different subjects the children are learning.
  • Send a photo of completed work to class teacher on Class Dojo (Tapestry for the EYFS), for feedback and to show that the work has been completed.
  • Ask for help if needed, using Class Dojo (Tapestry for the EYFS).
  • Talk to their friends using the secure Teams meeting.
  • Use online resources such as TTRockstars and Abacus to help practice other skills not covered by the Oak National Academy videos.
  • EYFS students will receive a variety of different activities based on a theme, to complete across the time they are off. These could include a nature walk, drawing or even cooking. There may also be phonics work to complete, dependent on their age range.
Parents will be expected to:

Tier 1

  • Communicate any issues with the work to the class teacher, during the school hours (8:30 to 16:00).
  • Support the children’s learning and promote a positive learning environment for the work to be completed.
